Hydrodynamic performance of semi-pelagic self-adjusting otter boards in demersal trawl fisheries

چکیده

In this study, we show how a novel self-adjusting, semi-pelagic otter board have high hydrodynamic efficiency and reduce seabed contact. The boards two adjustable flaps, which are controlled by on-board altimeters actuators, modifying their lift drag altering position in the water column. actuators governed Proportional Integral Derivative feedback system, uses altimeter data to maintain at preset target height above seabed. Full-scale experimental trials were conducted measure performance of new design system compare it with conventional seabed-contacting design. We demonstrate that is highly efficient has lift/drag ratio 4.2, 3.5 times boards. When was set 1 m, SAO contacted most 16% time; decreased 8% when raised 2 m seabed; there no contact 5 10 m.

Cetaceans and Pelagic Trawl Fisheries in the Western Approaches of the English Channel Cetaceans and Pelagic Trawl Fisheries in the Western Approaches of the English Channel

A joint WDCS/Greenpeace cetacean survey using conventional line-transect techniques and trialling other survey methodologies, including acoustic detection, was carried out between 21st of January and 8th of March 2004 in the Western Approaches of the English Channel. The main aims of this survey were to study the local dolphin, porpoise and whale populations, to monitor the winter pelagic trawl...

Is size-dependent pricing prevalent in fisheries? The case of Norwegian demersal and pelagic fisheries

It is commonly acknowledged that body weight of fish is a key factor in determining market value of landed catch, thus influencing optimal harvest strategies. However, in management strategy evaluations and bioeconomic modelling body size is often an overlooked economic parameter, and there are no systematic studies on prevalence of sizedependent pricing. Here we assess the presence and magnitu...

Small-eyed ray in Western Channel, Irish and Celtic Seas and West of Scotland, Demersal otter trawl

Small-eyed ray (Raja microocellata) is found on the inner continental shelf in the east Atlantic from the south-western coasts of the British Isles to northern Morocco (Stehmann and Bürkel, 1984). It is locally abundant in the Bristol Channel and parts of the English Channel (Ellis et al., 2005). It is an inshore demersal species, inhabiting the inner continental shelf waters down to a depth of...

When does fishing lead to more fish? Community consequences of bottom trawl fisheries in demersal food webs.

Bottom trawls are a globally used fishing gear that physically disturb the seabed and kill non-target organisms, including those that are food for the targeted fish species. There are indications that ensuing changes to the benthic invertebrate community may increase the availability of food and promote growth and even fisheries yield of target fish species. If and how this occurs is the subjec...
